Winter "Heat Wave" Broken?

After weeks of warm winter temperature, this morning the thermometer at Poplar Lake dipped to three degrees. With day time temperature from the mid twenties to low thirty and nights rarely below twenty degree, this has been the warmest January in over ten years. According Dave Clutter who records Poplar Lake weather for the state this year's January average temperature has been 19.61. Compare this to the nine year average of 6.79. We will now have to wait to see how the rest of the month's weather plays-out.

However even with the warmer then usual weather there was little, if any, melt down of the areas snow cover and ski conditions remain excellent on the Gunflint Trail's Nordic ski trails.
